V-J Day: How WWII Came to an End: Photos

Image
IT 'S OVER Seventy years ago, Japan surrendered in World War II, bringing to an end a six-year long conflict that would be the deadliest in human history. The announcement was cause for jubilation around the United States and among the Allied forces throughout the world. The spirit of the occasion was perhaps best captured in this photo taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt in Times Square on Aug. 14, 1945, in which an American sailor kisses a nurse. Today isn't the official anniversary of the end of the war in the United States. That comes September 2, the date the Japanese government formally signed documents agreeing to surrender. But for those who lived through it, August 14 is a day that brought simultaneously relief at the end of a long, bloody war, joy in victory and the prospect of soldiers returning home, and solemnity for those who never made it back. Top Archaeological Finds Expected in 2015

Image
Perhaps already in the first weeks of 2015 we may know the identity of the skeleton found buried beneath a massive mound at Amphipolis in northern Greece. About a third of a mile in circumference, this is Greece’s largest tomb and dates back to Alexander the Great’s reign in the late fourth century B.C. The discovery of the human remains came at the end of an extraordinary archaeological exploration that winded through huge decapitated sphinxes, walls guarded by colossal female statues and floors decorated with stunning mosaics. But archaeologists may do more than revealing who is buried in the mysterious mound. A new geophysical scan of the Kasta Hill, as the Amphipolis mound is known, has identified four areas of “especially high electrical resistance” beneath the massive monument, suggesting that further structures may lie beneath. Excavation around the new “hot spots” will possibly begin in the summer and new findings might add to the archaeological wonders...

Group Warns Buhari Over Appointment Of Customs’ New Boss

F ollowing the appointment of Col Hameed Ibrahim Ali (rtd) as the new Comptroller General of the Nigerian Customs Service, the President, League of Maritime Editors, Ovie Edomi, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to have a rethink over the appointment. Edomi on Friday, August 28, 2015, stated that though the appointment came with surprise, it could kill professionalism and spur low morale which will automatically impact on revenue drive. “First, the desire of every top Customs officer is to get to the peak of the career and impact on younger officers but in a situation where officers who have gotten to the peak cannot be called upon to head the Customs, it creates room for lack of confidence, low morale and dissatisfaction among the rank and file. The crop of Customs officer that Nigeria presently has has been well trained at home and abroad and can stand out amongst other Customs officers globally. It would only have been fair for Mr President to appoint from among the ra...

Keyamo Blasts Politicians Against Buhari's Appointments Pattern

Image
Press statement from revered lawyer, Festus Keyamo The so-called “uproar” over the perceived “lopsided” appointments made so far by President Buhari is nothing but an orchestrated frustration of a few jobless politicians who depend only on government appointments as their means of livelihood and, of course, the noise of the latest opposition party in town. The majority of Nigerians want to see good governance, pure and simple, and care less about the ethnic origin of those appointed into positions.  My worry is that the decade-long general division of government positions into “juicy” and “non-juicy”, and the mentality that these few “juicy” positions must be shared equally amongst the major ethnic groups was nothing but a contraption of the old order from which we have just liberated ourselves. To my mind, all government appointments pose an equal challenge to those appointed as a call to higher service of fatherland. All public positions come with an equal responsibil...

Ex-Lawmaker Slams Buhari, APC over Biased Fight against Insecurity

Image
A former member of the National Assembly from Plateau State, Honourable Bitrus Kaze has accused President Mohammadu Buhari and the APC-led federal government of bias in its fight against insecurity in the country, reminding Buhari of his promise to ‘belong to everybody and to nobody’.  In a statement issued in Jos, Kaze noted that the APC-controlled federal government has carried on with the fight against insecurity as if some sections of the country matter more than others.  “While taking over the reins of power, President Muhammadu Buhari relocated the military command centre to Maiduguri where it will remain until Boko Haram is completely subdued.  “Also, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has of recent been traversing Borno State and other parts of the North East, the birthplace and operational base of the Boko Haram insurgents. But most regrettably, the federal government has completely turned a blind eye to the perpetual killings by ‘unknown herdsmen’ on the Plateau.”...
