Why President Buhari Cancelled Proposed Cross-River Trip

The visit by the Nigerian president was meant for the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a 260km superhighway, but had to cancel the trip because the state was not ready for it yet. Confirming the cancellation on Thursday was Christian Ita, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River, who informed that the decision to postpone the ceremony was communicated to the governor in a letter signed by Abba Kyari, the president’s Chief of Staff . 'Super-gonorrhoea' outbreak across north of England sparks national alert

Fifteen cases have been detected by Public Health England (PHE) so far, the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV said. Reports to PHE's sexually transmitted bacteria reference unit (STBRU) of cases of the  infection being highly resistant  to the azithromycin drug have previously been rare, it added. Policeman Shoots At Couple For Refusing To Pay Bribe

Photo Credit: Vanguard The operator of the tricycle, Godwin Ekpo, was said to be returning from church on Wednesday, September 16 with his wife, Idongesit Ekpo and their four children when they were flagged down by the policemen apparently to extort money from them. According to Vanguard, Ekpo refused to give the policemen any money, arguing that he was driving his wife and children. It was reported that as soon as he drove off, a corporal fired at the vehicle shattering the skull of Idongesit and injuring Ekpo’s jaw. NEITI Wants More Powers

Stakeholders in the extractive industry has advise that more powers should be given to the Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI). The stakeholders called for the assessment of the law setting up the NEITI at a roundtable on review of NEITI Act of 2007. In a press statement made available to Naij.com by the Director of Communication, Orji Ogbonnaya, the stakeholders were of the view that NEITI needs more powers to  “effectively police and monitor the oil, gas and mining industry given the present commitment to reform the sector” , and also  “enthrone transparency and accountability.” The review, according to participants at the roundtable is even more necessary considering the courage, competence, integrity and professionalism with which NEITI has executed its mandate over the years. Army Redeploys Pardoned Soldiers To Battle B’Haram

About 3,032 Nigerian soldiers who were pardoned by the Nigerian Army have been redeployed to the northeast to combat Boko Haram fighters. According to The Punch, the soldiers were part of the soldiers dismissed in 2014. The soldiers were said to have refused to combat the insurgents on the grounds that they were ill-equipped. The soldiers were dismissed by their commanders in what was considered an act of insubordination. Maj. Gen. Adeniyi Oyebade was reported to have  headed the review panel that eventually reinstated into the Nigerian army. The soldiers after the completion of a two week reorientation programme were deployed to the 7 Division Headquarters. The most likely cause of the explosion was the gas leakage. According to the reports from the scene, a gas cylinder used for welding exploded around 5 pm in a workshop situated near the ABC Bus park at the crossing of Eliozu road and the East-West road. Hearing the explosion residents, motorists and passers-by ran for cover. Two people were killed at the spot, with their legs severed in the blast. FG Seeks Saraki's Arrest

The Code of Conduct Tribunal in Abuja begins its hearing over Senate President Bukola Saraki for supposed “ false declaration of assets.’’ However, Senate president missed at the trial and is represented by his legal counsel, Mahmud Magaji. M.S. Hassan, the prosecuting counsel, asked the court to issue a bench warrant against Saraki for failing to appear before the court after being summoned. ‎He particularly demanded that Saraki should be detained within two hours and brought to court. In defence of Senate president, Magaji reasoned that the prosecuting counsel, who is a deputy director at the ministry of justice and who signed the accusations against Saraki, has no locus standi on the development. He argued that charges could only be brought against Saraki by the attorney-general of federation, who is yet to be nominated by President Muhammadu Buhari.
