Yuguda Breaks Silence On ‘Missing’ Bauchi Aircraft
Malam Isa Yuguda, the former governor of Bauchi state, has spoken about the missing aircraft, which became a subject of controversy.
Ex Governor Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State
Briefing journalists on Tuesday, September 15, Yuguda revealed that Bauchi state government-owned plane that was allegedly found in Morocco is on lease to Overland Airways.
Yuguda stressed that the full story of the plane, which was bought by the earlier administration of Governor Ahmadu Adamu Mu’azu, is contained in the handover notes, and his successor, Mohamed Abdullahi Abubakar, did not need any assets recovery committee to discover what happened to the aircraft. He added that he even included a paragraph about the plane in the handover notes’ executive summary so that Abubakar would not miss it.
According to Daily Trust, the former governor further dismissed the reports that he had been invited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to answer questions about the plane’s whereabouts.
“EFCC has not invited me on this or any other issue. When they gave me a clearance, they told me that I have no further issues to answer. However, I am aware that some petitions have been instigated against me. Based on some of those, I may be required to come forward and offer some explanations and I am fully ready to do so,” he said.
The ex-governor added that at the time he left office, the plane was on lease to Overland Airways, which he described as a reputable airline with a good safety record.
Yuguda said that although the plane underwent C-check in a Moroccan hangar and was certified fit to fly, smoke was emitting from the engine into the cabin. Therefore, it was necessary to dismantle the engine and take it to Rolls Royce in England for a full work over.
Yuguda advised his successor to contact Overland Airways to find out the current state of things. He also warned Abubakar to beware of rumour mongers, especially those who say that he was trying to instigate the Bauchi state House of Assembly to impeach the governor.
The ex-governor stressed that he would never do anything to disrupt the peace and tranquility of Bauchi state and ready to help his successor whenever he needed explanation on any issue.
Meanwhile, a special committee set up by Governor Abubakar discovered thatYuguda had given out 64 cars to politicians, former commissioners, special advisers and top civil servants before he handed over.
