Pensioners urged to access free health care

Managing Director of Defence Health Maintenance Limited, Commodore Ahmed Abdullahi (Retired), has called on ex-service men to register to benefit from free health care segment of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
Abdullahi who spoke to journalists at the sidelines of the Military Pension Stakeholders Interractive Session held on Monday in Abuja said the armed forces HMO is saddled with the responsibility of administering the NHIS segment for the Nigerian Armed Forces.
He explained that in 2012 the Federal Executive Council brought the armed forces retirees under the scheme and made provisions for their health care.
“This Department takes care of a substantial part of the burden of health care for retirees, not based on deductions from their pensions, no! The government pays for it. 100 percent,” he noted.
“The premium is paid by the Federal government, it is paid yearly and we pay this to the hospitals, I have about 300 hospitals under my care across the country which takes care of the registered retirees and their spouses,” Abdullahi added.
He further explained that not only retirees, widowers and widows of deceased personnel are also entitled; four biological children of retirees under the age of 18 are also entitled.
Abudullahi stated that: “the challenge is that of understanding, some are still foot-dragging to come on board… there has been this misunderstanding that it is being deducted from their pay, which is not.”
“What of the widow or widower how do you deduct….I am calling on retiree to come onboard and take advantage of what government has provided for them,” he said.
