India is a real treasure trove. There’s a whole category of slowly crumbling and awe-inspiring architectural wonders. For example, stepwells that stretch down ten levels into the ground. Many of us have never even heard about them! These massive structures look like gates to the underworld. They were created as a primary way to access the water table in regions where the climate vacillates between very dry during most months, with a few weeks of torrential monsoons in the spring. Thirty years ago, journalist Victoria Lautman started to studying Indian stepwells. Check out her incredible findings.
