17 perm secs axed as ministers take oath today

Buhari has retired 17 permanent secretaries and merged some ministries ahead of
today’s swearing-in of 36 ministers-designate and inauguration of the new
Federal Executive Council (FEC).
Daily Trust learnt that the affected permanent secretaries include Aliyu Ismaila
(Defence), Godknows Igali (Power), Abdulkadir Musa (Industry, Trade and
Investment), Linus Awute (Health), Mrs. Fatima Bamidele (Niger Delta Affairs),
John Obinna Chukwu (FCT), Ezekiel Oyemomi (Women Affairs), Anastasia Nwaobia
(Finance), Tunji Olaopa (Communications Technology), George A. Ossi (Land,
Housing and Urban Development), MacJohn Nwaobiala (Education), Muhammed Bashir
(Transport), Abdullahi Yola (Justice), and Alhaji Baba Umar Farouk
(Mines and Steel Development).
The permanent secretaries were reportedly relieved of their appointment because they were said to be senior to the Acting Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HOCSF), Mrs Winifred Ekanem Oyo-Ita.
Consequently, Buhari, according to a statement issued last night by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, approved the appointment of the following as Permanent Secretaries: Mrs. Ayotunde Adesugba, Alhaji Mahmoud Isa-Dutse, Mr. Taiwo Abidogun, Dr. Bukar Hassan, Mrs. Wakama Belema Asifieka, Mr. Jalal Ahmad Arabi, Mr. Sabiu Zakari, Mrs. Obiageli Phyllis Nwokedi, Mr. Aminu Nabegu, Mr. Bamgbose Olukunle Oladele, Mr. Alo Williams Nwankwo, Dr. Shehu Ahmed, Mr. Ogbonnaya Innocent Kalu, Mrs. Nuratu Jimoh Batagarawa, Mr. Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa, Mr. Bassey Apkanyung, Mr. Louis Edozien and Dr. Ugo Roy.
The statement also showed that the Ministries of Information and Culture have been merged. Also merged, were the Ministries of Works and Housing as well as Youths and Sports.
This suggests a reduction in the number of federal ministries from 28 to 25.
As reflected in the statement, the Ministry of Police Affairs may have been brought under the Ministry of Internal Affairs which was known as Interior under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
The Ministry of Aviation may have also been brought under the Ministry of Transportation.
The presidential spokesman said the president had also approved the deployment of federal permanent secretaries as follows: Dr. Shehu Ahmad, Ministry of Agric & Rural Development; Arch Sunday Echono, Ministry Communications; Alh. Sabiu Zakari, Ministry of Transportation; Mrs. Ayotunde Adesugba, Ministry of Information & Culture; Amb. Danjuma Sheni, Ministry of Defence; Dr. Shade Yemi-Esan, Ministry of Education; Mrs. Fatima Mede, Ministry of Budget & National Planning; Alh. Mahmoud Isa Dutse, Ministry of Finance; Amb. Bulus Lolo, Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Dr. Amina Shamaki, Ministry of Health; and Mr. Aliyu Bisalla, Ministry of Industry, Trade & Investment.
