FG urged to assist farmers to adopt mechanised farming

Mahindra Group has called on the federal government to promote mechanised farming so as to boost capacity in the agricultural sector towards self-sufficiency in local food production.  
The President and Chief Executive of Mahindra Agri-Business Ashok Sharma made the call at a press conference in Lagos to announce the company's planned expansion of its $16.9 billion Indian conglomerate to Africa.
He said there was need for government to assist farmers in deploying tractors and other modern Agricultural utilities to encourage mechanised farming in the country. 
Sharma said the group was looking to tap new opportunities and strengthen its focus in Africa by setting up a new business unit in Nigeria.  
Nigeria offers opportunities for all the vehicles within the automotive and farm equipment sectors, notably Automotive, Tractors, Agri Businesses, Gensets, Trucks and Buses. 
The firm is adopting a strategy of ‘One Mahindra’ in Africa where "we shall offer our entire galaxy of products and services through a single window,” Mr Sharma said.
“Our Nigeria operations would be handled by a few expats and a significant number of local populations which would aid us further in getting acquainted with the Nigerian economy and culture." 
He explained that his company which was India's largest utility vehicle manufacturer and also world’s largest tractor manufacturer by volume targets $1billion business in Africa between 2020 and 2022. 
He said: “Mahindra & Mahindra currently has active presence in 30 countries across Africa with assembly bases in Chad, Mali, Benin, Ghana, and Nigeria and generates business of $120 million annually from Africa. The group sees great growth potential in Africa with the business growing by 10 times to around $1 billion in five to seven years." 
Sharma stated that to achieve the targets, the company plans to set up two more offices in Egypt and Nigeria with local employees who would be involved in developing and selling products for the local markets. ‎ 
He said besides being world’s largest Tractor Company by volume, Mahindra has worked intensively in India with the farming community and have offered solutions to improve agriculture productivity.  
Sharma maintained that ‎the Company plans to bring those solutions to Nigeria and contribute in improving productivity of farmers.
