APC Reveals Why Governors Have Struggled To Pay Salaries

Lai Mohammed, national publicity secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has suggested why state governors have struggled to pay workers’ salaries
According to him, the inability of some state governors to pay salaries of workers is not evidence that they have mismanaged state funds, Daily Independent reports.
The APC spokesman made this remarks while reacting to calls for probe on governors on the platform of the APC who have failed to meet up with their financial obligations.
Lai Mohammed alleged that the fall in the monthly revenue of the states contributed in the governors’ salaries arrears.
He said: “The issue is that the inability to pay staff salary is not conclusive evidence of  corruption or maladministration or misappropriation of funds. It will be wrong to conclude that simply because the governor has not been able to pay staff salaries that the governor must have embezzled funds. It  is not correct.
“The truth is that in 2014, about June 2014, about 840 billion naira was being shared between the three tiers of government monthly. However by 2015, it came down to under 380 billion naira which means that most states suffered reduction of  more than 50 per cent  in money  that was accruable  to them. So a government that has been taking as much as 6 billion naira was now taking 3 billion naira.
“Meanwhile it’s overhead was fixed but the income was being reduced. So it is not 100 per cent that all those that were unable to pay salary arrears must have been guilty of corruption, No”.
“Secondly even if as a serving governor, their tenure will expire  and you are going to account for your misdeed but is that why we should subject innocent citizens whose only crime is that they have worked for  their pay to suffer and not be paid? That’s why the government embarked on the  large package.”
Lai Mohammed’s claims comes just days after one of the governors who has come under heavy criticism, Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun state
Aregbesola has been owing workers in the state for many months and just last month in what analysts describe as a lame excuse, he blamed it on the drop of
It is however a relief to the workers that the governor has promised to pay their salary arrears before the forthcoming Sallah celebrations.
