Apple and Cisco team up

Apple is pushing further into the enterprise space, announcing a new partnership with Cisco Systems to help bring more iPhones and iPads into the workplace. The companies said the partnership, announced today, is designed to help Apple’s mobile devices communicate more effectively on corporate networks where Cisco gear is widely used. The tech giants also plan to jointly work on technology to help workers with iPhones and iPads better exploit Cisco’s collaboration products, including its video- and Web-conferencing services. “iOS is the world’s best mobile platform, and nearly every Fortune 500 and Global 500 company today has put iOS at the centre of their mobile strategy,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook. “iPhone and iPad have become essential tools for the modern workforce and are changing the way work gets done. Together with Cisco, we believe we can give businesses the tools to maximise the potential of iOS and help employees become even more productive using the devices they already love.” Cisco executive chairman John Chambers said 95 per cent of Fortune 500 companies use Cisco products. “Through this engineering and go-to-market partnership, we’re offering our joint customers the ability to seamlessly extend that awesome Cisco environment to their favourite iOS devices,” he said. “Together, we’re going to help teams achieve higher levels of productivity and effectiveness.” The announcement comes as Apple, a powerhouse in devices sold to consumers, has been taking steps to build a broader presence in business. Last year, Apple struck a partnership with IBM to jointly create apps for the workplace, while IBM employees help sell and support Apple devices with corporate clients. One impetus is a slowdown in tablet sales. iPad sales have fallen for six straight quarters; revenue from iPads declined 24 per cent in the nine months ended June 27, compared with the same period a year earlier. Cisco, meanwhile, has been trying to narrow its focus to more profitable businesses since Chuck Robbins assumed the CEO post from Mr. Chambers at the end of the July Cisco said its partnership with Apple will see it deliver experiences “specially optimised for iOS” across mobile, cloud, and premises-based collaboration tools such as Cisco Spark, Cisco Telepresence and Cisco WebEx. The firms are somewhat unlikely allies, with Cisco suing Apple back in 2007 for violating its trademark of the ‘iPhone’, a name Cisco acquired in 2000 when it bought a small device company. Apple is widely expected to unveil its next set of iPhones on September 9.
