Corruption War To Focus On Jonathan's Ministers, Oil Chiefs

The major issues of focus today Monday, September 14, in the Nigerian daily newspapers are on the corruption war, screening of the ministerial nominees by the Department of Security Service, the arrest of a Lagos businessman by the crimes commission over fraud of billions of naira and the fight over who succeeds the late Ooni of Ife.
The fight against corruption by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration is said to commence with full force .
In a report by This Day, the prosecution of ex-government officials who served in the former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration and their accomplices in the private sector will begin in earnest.
A presidency source, who confirmed this, said preliminary investigations had enabled the Buhari administration to identify some ex-government officials especially former ministers and heads of parastatals as well as other persons in the public or private sector who helped to conceal their ill-gotten wealth for prosecution in the corruption war.
The source added that the officials cut across the oil and gas sector, among other sectors.

On the issue of those nominated for the ministerial position to be announced this September, The Punch reports that Festus Odimegwu, a former managing director of Nigerian Breweries limited and Prof Pat Utomi, one time presidential candidate are among those screened by the DSS.
Also, former governor of Osun state, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Lagos lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), a former chief of army, Abdulrahman Dambazu amongst others are those said to have been screened already as nominees for President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet.
However,   There are indications that three immediate past governors supposedly failed the screening exercise owing to some fraud cases.
Talk of fraud cases, an anti-graft agency has arrested a Lagos businessman, Alhaji Mohammed Gobir for allegedly defrauding the foremost outdoor advertising company of cash estimated to be N1.7 billion in various currencies.

The Nation reports that Gobir was picked up at his Ikoyi home and put in detention.
According to the report, the mega rip-off allegedly fetched Gobir $3,500,000, N514,457,151.87, $2,102,740, and 51,000 pounds sterling at various times.
The arrest was confirmed by the head of media and publicity of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren. He said that investigation into the scam continues.

Another issue of fraud is also reported by The Guardian. It says that the Senate had received a petition accusing the permanent secretary in the power ministry, Godknows Igali of diverting N3.5 billion meant for payment of beneficiaries of the National Power Sector Apprenticeship Scheme (NAPSAS).
Igali who had disclosed  without anything to show for it is to be investigated over some alleged scams in the sector.
Contrary to reports making the rounds that a new Ooni has been selected, Prince Peter Adetola Ogunleye from the Giesi ruling house Ile Ife .

According to Daily Sun, Ogunleye, an octogenar­ian, who also contested the revered stool in 1980 with the late Oba Okunade Si­juwade also warned stake­holders and other interested parties against bribery in the appointment of a new Ooni.
He spoke against the backdrop of alleged plans by some individuals, who were said not to be bonafide members of the Giesi dy­nasty to contest the stool.
The prince said that the family had commenced se­rious scrutiny to determine the rightful prince from the ruling house who are eli­gible for the throne.
